UPDATE 7/11/08: The launch date +1 data is out – up to 652 applications! See our latest blog post for the details and an updated chart. There’s more data coming in the days and weeks, but we won’t be adding it to old posts – so be sure to subscribe to our blog!
On AppStore launch, Pinch Media counted 552 applications – 417 of them paid, 135 of them free. (EDIT: Things are moving – we’re up to 559 applications at 7:00 PM EDT, 421 paid / 138 free. More data tomorrow.) Paid applications ranged in price from $0.99 to $69.99, with the most common price points being $0.99 (85 applications), $9.99 (82 applications), and $4.99 (62 applications). We’ve put together a bar graph of iPhone application price distribution, below.

Greg – nice sleuthing there. This is great data and I hope you’ll keep it up-to-date. This is a useful resource for developers looking at pricing.
Greg, fascinating to see this data. Looks like people are trying to capture as much marketshare as possible early on.
Is there an rss feed of the iphone apps available on the store?
It seems like the prices are changing over time. Some applications were Free and are now paying.
What app is $69.99?
Vincent – I can imagine prices will shift over time, both up and down. We’ll be watching closely to report on interesting trends and how the market evolves – stay tuned!
ForeFlight Mobile is the $69.99 application. It’s an application targeted at pilots and provides weather and airport information and more.

Very interesting, I was going to try gathering similar data myself.
Thanks for gathering the data! I think another interesting way to plot the data would be a pie chart, since the ‘0′ data point is a singularity, and it makes it hard to compare, say ‘free’ vs ‘0-5′ vs ‘5-10′ etc… Just my 2 cents!
The chart shows 69 as the highest, but I did see one that is 79. Look at LionClock. Short description….. “Easily keep track of time you spend on different projects”
Yes indeed, Justin – added tonight, after we made this chart. Fresh data tomorrow.
You should be able to pay to get an iPhone unlocked so that people who spend 6 months in Europe and 6 months in the US can change their SIM to a local SIM. Roaming rates are ok for holidays but not for 6 months.
